‘American Idol’ viewers cast record 55 million votes

The “American Idol” viewing audience set an all-time record last night by casting 55 million votes after the Top 11 Performance Show. The voting will determine which “Idols” go home in a dramatic double elimination tonight.

According to a FOX press release, more than 55 million votes were cast on Mar. 30 after the Top 11 performed Elton John songs, setting a new “Idol” voting record for such an early stage in the competition. During what many are calling the most dramatic results show in the reality show’s history, finalist Casey Abrams was saved from elimination by the judges last Thursday after he received the fewest votes.

With the save no longer in play, two contestants will be sent home during the live Results Show tonight.

The show will feature a performance by “American Idol” season 3 champ and GRAMMY®-winner Fantasia, featuring her latest single, “Collard Greens and Cornbread.”

will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas and Academy Award®- and GRAMMY-winner Jamie Foxx will perform their first-ever musical collaboration on the “Idol” stage. The duo will sing “Hot Wings (I Wanna Party),” an original song written for the highly anticipated animated feature film “Rio.”
