Actress raped and killed in Chennai

The small-time actress found dead in her house near the Saidapet railway station, on Friday was raped before being murdered, the police said on Saturday. The prime suspect Suresh was still at large, they said.Ashwini (25) of Mumbai was found dead in her house in Saidapet by her husband Sivanandam who alerted the police.

Her body was shifted to the government hospital in Royapettah where an autopsy is yet to be conducted. But doctors who inspected the body are said to have confirmed to the investigation officers that she was raped before being done to death.

"We are expecting the postmortem report and the forensic report based on the samples collected from the murder scene," a senior police officer said. "As Suresh was last seen by some neighbours near Ashwini's house, we suspected him," the officer said. One of Ashwini's neighbours told the police about seeing Suresh on his bike at 12.30 pm on Friday.

After the incident, though, Suresh's mobile was switched off and he disappeared, increasing the police's suspicion. A special team is now in Suresh's native village of Ponnur near Vandavasi.After Ashwini and Sivanandam moved into the rented house in Saidapet two-and-a-half-years ago, Suresh was introduced to Ashwini as Sivanandam's cousin.

He frequented the house and even came when Sivanandam was not there, according to some neighbours. The police said it was possible that Ashwini developed a new friendship that irked Suresh. These differences may have led to her death, a police officer said.

According to the police, Ashwini and Sivanandam, a native of Minnal near Vellore, fell in love five years ago when he was posted in Mumbai for a couple of months. They got married and moved to Chennai. Sivanandam did not want his wife to act in films and the couple often quarrelled before the matter was sorted out by their family members.
